We wanted to thank all of our guests and staff for another amazing year at Congdon’s! We will turn 65 years old in 2020, but we’re nowhere near retirement. In fact, we think the best is yet to come.
The restaurant and bakery had another record-breaking season, with more people coming in and out of our doors than ever before. We improved the patio area we added in 2018 so we could open it more freque ntly during hot and cold weather. This greatly improved our ability to seat more people and accommodate larger parties. We also added some great menu items like doughnut pancakes that were a huge hit, and started experimenting with more fritter flavors, including pumpkin and strawberry. Are there any other flavors you think we should try out?
We were very excited to finally acquire the land next door (between us and Mike’s Clam Shack) this year. It’s a lot of land (12 acres!), but we knew it was necessary to facilitate our parking needs. What else will go here? We’re not sure, but we’ve got some ideas and are really excited about its potential! Most of all, we’re thrilled to have secured the space and ensure we can continue to meet the growing ranks of Congdon’s fans for generations to come!
Our food truck park, Congdon’s After Dark, also continued to improve in 2020. We added more trucks — more than 30 in total — and really sought to raise the bar in only inviting the best trucks Maine has to offer. We were excited to host such a great group of independent restaurateurs and look forward to expanding and improving the park in 2020. We added pavers to the park to help wheelchairs and strollers navigate better, and a kid’s play food truck as well. We also added doughnut sundaes to our Congdon’s truck, which was a big hit! Thanks to our friends at Barreled Souls, we were able to offer even more doughnut beers in 2019, including stouts made from each of our fritters and, of course, the infamous Honey Dip Blonde ale. There aren’t many parks like us, so it’s hard to compare what we’re doing to other, but we’re committed to ongoing improvements and to continue to provide a unique outdoor dining experience!
We also are very proud to have raised more than $50,000 this year for local organization and charities this years through our fundraising efforts. Tithing Tuesdays at Congdon’s After Dark were a huge hit and helped eight different organization. Meanwhile we hosted fundraisers for the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk and My Pal Spencer! Further, we have a dedicated menu item that donates a portion of proceeds to Camp Sunshine in Casco, and our Giving Tree provided more than 14 boxes of diapers and 8 trash bags full of toys to families in need through Alpha PRC in Sanford. And of course, you all helped us fill out hundreds of cards to send to the troops overseas this holiday season. Being in a community means being part of a community and are committed to helping our community and state live up to the billing of truly being “The Way Life Should Be.”
Last but not least, we had more staff than ever before this year — more than 155 at it’s peak! It’s a lot of people in a small space, but we are so grateful to have the greatest staff in the world. Whether you’re a teenager looking for a summer gig or a full-time professional, we hold our staff to a high standard and expect nothing but the best — and that’s exactly what we get! Thank you to all of you who make Congdon’s possible.
